Largo, Florida: From “Citrus City” to “City of Progress”

Lakeside view at sunset with green grass, trees, and houses in the distance.

Centrally located within Pinellas County, just a few miles away from the Gulf beaches, Largo isn’t a beach town, but it’s very close to gorgeous beaches. The city of Largo functions more like a residential and commercial hub, positioned between major employment centers in downtown St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Judging by its location, it’s easy to understand why Largo is aptly nicknamed the “City of Progress.”

However, before its post-war transformation, Largo was largely agricultural, lined with citrus groves, cattle, and vegetable farms. When the Orange Belt Railway arrived in 1888, the area became a logistics point for transporting oranges and other produce to Northern markets. This was a prelude to what Largo would soon become.

After World War II, the city underwent rapid growth and transformation, with the population increasing from around 5,000 in 1960 to over 80,000 in 2025. The city focused on developing its infrastructure, which led to road expansions, residential subdivision growth, and municipal services. And then there’s the expression of the city’s long-term planning priorities through these landmarks:

  • Largo Central Park - This piece of land used to be the County fairgrounds, remade into an expansive park that houses the Largo Central Railroad, a railway with train rides for kids. Today, people recognize Largo as a city where they bring their kids to Train Weekend. The park also has a playground that offers accessible equipment for children with disabilities.
  • Largo Public Library - This library sits next to the Largo Central Park, and so they function as a shared civic campus. The Largo Public Library goes beyond books and quiet study, as it also features meeting rooms available for reservation, genealogy services, and a reading courtyard for people to read and relax.
  • Highland Recreation Complex - This complex signals long-term residential stability, offering fun activities suitable for all ages. It has a three-story indoor playground, a fitness center, a 1/13 mile walking track, party rooms, and an aquatic center with a zero-depth pool entrance (perfect for little ones) and slides.
  • Florida Botanical Gardens - Year-round, this 150-acre botanical garden educates, inspires, and celebrates nature with 20+ distinct garden environments. Residents stroll here on sunny mornings; others bring kids on field trips. Once a year, the Holiday Lights in the Gardens event happens. The gardens transform into a nighttime wonderland, with LED lights draping the trees, trellises, walkways, and plantings. Live entertainment and seasonal food and drinks make this annual gathering even more memorable.

Largo’s Impressive Economic Character

Part of why Largo is such a livable city is its working backbone—its commercial and industrial industries. Largo is largely considered as a healthcare-oriented city, with HCA Florida Largo Hospital serving as the major regional hospital. Around this establishment, you’ll see a cluster of medical office buildings, specifically along Indian Rocks Road and parts of West Bay Drive. The healthcare industry doesn’t just bring medical specialists; it also supports laboratories, medical supply businesses, and specialty trades.

Meanwhile, East Bay Drive is Largo’s retail spine. Here, you’ll find a mix of grocery stores, auto dealerships, restaurants, and professional offices. The road experiences a daily traffic of nearly 50,000 vehicles, making it a prime location for retail. Another significant commercial area is at Ulmerton Road, which connects Southern Clearwater, Central Largo, and Northern Pinellas Park. The U.S. Route 19 also intersects directly with Ulmerton Road, while the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is situated off the north east end of the street. Such a strategic location is one reason why the Ulmerton stretch attracts retail chains, warehouses, and logistics companies.

At St. Pete Fabrication, we are equipped to support Largo’s core industries. The healthcare industry can benefit from our code-compliant metal fabrication, whether it’s for equipment brackets and mounts or steel stairs and railings. Warehouse-heavy zones can also rely on us for durable security gates, guardrails, and equipment platforms.

Largo’s advantage and our service reach don’t stop at healthcare and light industrial corridors. The city’s proximity to Indian Rocks Beach, Bellair Beach, and Clearwater Beach means you’re just a 10-20-minute drive away from the sand (and without paying beachfront prices). For residents looking to build or remodel homes in the city, our pergola structures and custom stair and balcony railings can elevate outdoor spaces. Business owners likewise need metal solutions that are corrosion-resistant and custom-built for coastal performance, and we offer just that without compromising on safety, style, and compliance.
