Embrace the Outdoors in Palm Harbor

South of Tarpon Springs, rests Palm Harbor, Florida which is a coastal community on the west side which shares the Gulf of Mexico. On the north east side of Palm Harbor is Lake Tarpon which is not suitable for swimming but is considered one of the best fishing spots in Pinellas county. Known for large sized bass, crappie, bluegill, alligator gar, blue tilapia, and catfish, tours can be booked or visitors can cast from the public piers or use a boat ramp to get in the water. On the gulf side, you'll find plenty of ideal spots for boating, paddleboarding, or partaking in other water activities.

Palm Harbor had its first settlers in the 1860s and was founded in the 1880s, with some calling it Bay St. Joseph in the earliest days. The region was then called Southernland before becoming Palm Harbor. Some think the former name was in reference to the Southern Land and Development Company that helped the region become popular for citrus and cattle farming. Today, the city celebrates this history with the annual Palm Harbor Citrus Festival, held each spring. The organizers line Florida Avenue with food, a beer garden, carnival rides, music, games, performances by local organizations, and of course, citrus-related activities.

Compared to the downtowns of St. Pete or Clearwater, downtown Palm Harbor is more low-key, offering a healthy smattering of local shops, bars, and restaurants (from casual fare to fine dining). Palm Harbor residents have an average age of 50, so the downtown attractions cater to these active retirees and established families. Overall, you'll find the area is more suburban than those two popular destinations to the south.

Another local draw is the Innisbrook Resort and Gold Club. Recently ranked in USA today among the top 5 best golf resorts. It boasts 63 holes of world class golf, including one set, the Copperhead Course, where the PGA’s Valspar Championship is held.

Get Outside and Get Inspired in Palm Harbor

A new but well known path which cuts through the east and west sides of Palm Harbor is the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail. In total, this path will be a 75 mile loop perfect for walking, biking, skating or scooting. You can find a map, updates on the progress, rules, and all sorts of other useful information here. The trail extends all the way down into St. Pete, up through Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and across Tarpon Springs before heading south on the other side of the county.

While hot and humid in the summer, there are no shortage of outdoor activities to get involved with in the area. Many different places can serve as launch spots and waterways for cruising on kayaks and similar vessels. Try Honeymoon Island State Park which is on the opposite side of the bay as Crystal Beach (both of which are great places to explore in the water) or Pop Stansell Park which is in the Sutherland Bayou and connects to the Gulf.

Whether inside or outside, you'll find plenty of relaxing, stimulating, and visually attractive activities and locations to keep you entertained. If you're trying to enhance your own outdoor area with a pergola or renovate or replace a metal staircase or railing on your property, reach out to one of our team members at St. Pete Fabrication and we'll be happy to get the ball rolling for you. We share this beautiful space and are happy to help the local community.
